Reading Notes: Nina Paley's Sita Sings the Blues Part A

This short animated film has kept me so entertained. The way that Nina Paley was able to incorporate two different stories, Blues music, and historical background was very inspiring.

Seeing this animated film has opened up my eyes to a different perspective on going about and changing stories for the weekly story posts. I think Nina Paley does a great job of sticking to the basic story, but also adding her own elements. This is something that I hope to get better at as I continue on with story posts.

When thinking about what I could do in terms of rewriting the story, I would take the modern approach further and maybe make the Ramayana scenes regarding Rama and Sita's love story with a more modern approach. For example, in this film Dave and his wife's story is the backdrop story behind the Ramayana. I would instead make the Ramayana story with two modern day people, set it in Norman, and see what I could do with it. It would be a challenge, but it would be interesting to see what I came up with.

Something I also learned from this video that I didn't from Narayana's Ramayana was that it is presumed that Vishnu's 10th avatar is yet to come. I read more about this, researched the topic, and found out even more about what my religion believes in. This is amazing, because I honestly did not know that before.

I am looking forward to watching the rest of this film tomorrow. The whole story was actually summed up in the first part, so I am not really sure what to expect in the second half of this video. I really enjoy the commentary within the film, as it has also allowed me to question some of the things depicted in the story. I reached out to my Intro to Hinduism professor, and also shared this video with her.

We are also reading Narayana's Ramayana this week in my Intro to Hinduism class. Good thing I already read it!

  1. I am so glad you watched Nina's film, Sonali: she is one of my heroes! And I had forgotten about your Intro to Hinduism class where you are reading the Ramayana: how perfect! You can tell the other students about this film; it's controversial in some circles (no surprise), but I think it is, at least so far, America's one great contribution to the ongoing collection of Ramayana retellings. :-)

An Introduction to Me, Myself, and I

Welcome to my blog! ~~~ (Image information: Personal photo of myself from Camp Crimson - July 2016) ~~~       Hi! My name is Sonali Demla, a junior Chemical Biosciences Pre-Dental major at the University of Oklahoma. I grew up in Lawton, Oklahoma with my little sister, little brother, and my dog Danny! My sister and I currently live together as she also attends the University of Oklahoma, and my little brother is in middle school. We're all really close, but my sister and I are closer than you might think. What do I mean by this? Well, when people ask me an interesting fact about myself, I tell them that my sister and I have the same birthday, except we're one year apart . Yes, an exact 365 days!  Our birthday is actually coming up very soon - January 16th to be exact. It's a nice date because usually it falls on the MLK holiday, so it seems fitting that we get the day off for our birthday. Some people say, "Well, that must suck." I actu...

Week 3 Story: Finding My True Love

(Image Information: Rama and Sita with Gods Fred Miller. Source:  Flickr ) ~~~        It was a wonderful evening in Panchvati, and I was admiring the scenery right in front of me. Sita was out in the river, taking a bath. I was lucky to have her, and I knew she was lucky to have me.        Deep in my thoughts, I noticed something in the front yard. Beyond the trees, leaves, and greenery, there was movement. Someone was there.       It was a woman. I thought I would never see anyone more beautiful than Sita, but this woman in the front yard was gorgeous. When she walked around, her eyes glistened, her teeth sparkled, and she had the perfect womanly figure.       As she approached me, I began to feel nervous. I began to ...
